LFT

LFT stands for a group of materials known as long-fibre reinforced thermoplastics. In their raw state LFTs take the form of long-fibre reinforced granulate pellets of 10-25 mm in length. These pellets are melted in an extruder. The squeeze casting and injection moulding techniques represent two of the most frequently used LFT processing methods. LFT squeeze casting sees the highly viscous mass placed into a tempered mould using a handling system (e.g. a needle gripper) before being moulded to form a component when the mould is closed. The LFT injection moulding technique is comparable with a classical injection moulding process which uses overpressure to inject the mass into the mould cavity. Both techniques are suitable for large-scale production.

LFT materials can also be processed in combination with other preforms such as continuously fibre-reinforced organosheets in order to fulfil increased strength and stiffness requirements.
